Verse of the Day: “But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.”
1 Corinthians 2:9
I get so many junk emails. And when I think about it, somewhere along the line I clicked something so that I would be the recipient of those emails. I can’t say they are unsolicited. I just can’t remember how they got in there or where it started.
I spent a good part of my morning yesterday unsubscribing to so many emails. At one time I thought it was a good idea to look at a product, or sign up for a login to a website. In doing this, I agreed to let them send me emails every day. Somewhere along the line I agreed to at least twenty something emails in the course of a morning. I’d like to say I never saw it coming. The truth is, it didn’t bother me. Routinely every morning I would check my email, delete the junk mail and repeat the cycle the next day. It became a routine.
It started me thinking. How many things do we allow into our lives that are never checked but we accept them anyway. I’ve been better at applying scrutiny to things in the past year and a half, but prior to that it was a festival of bad things. Some things I would take out while allowing others to exist without getting checked. It was a cycle that repeated itself unfortunately.
I remember someone saying, it all starts with one drink. It’s funny that when I would drink, I would staunchly defend it. I would say there was nothing wrong with it. Even though I had seen first hand how it destroys a marriage, kills people through disease and impairment and leads to so many bad decisions - I still did it. And that was one of many many many bad things I left unchecked. I didn’t like the bad things in my inbox, but I never clicked on the unsubscribe button to remove it. I just allowed it to exist.
How many of you know full and well of the bad things in your life but do nothing to remove them?
Pretty unfortunate. Just like the junk email, we get use to these things showing up in our lives. Adultery, profanity, judgement, lying, all of these are like unwanted emails, yet we allow them to continue showing up every single day.
At some point you have to take the time to unsubscribe. They have to be removed for good. You control the inbox. It’s not like you’re checking everyone else’s inbox. It’s yours.
Take responsibility for the things that you have ownership of. Notice that I didn’t say control? Control is after the fact. You can only control something you’ve allowed. Responsibility comes after you’ve allowed something. Only then can you remove it.
“And he did evil, because he prepared not his heart to seek the Lord.”
