Wash Your Mouth Out With Soap
Wash Your Mouth Out With Soap
“For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”
Matthew 12:37
This phrase or Idiom was first recorded being used in the early 1800s. It was used as a remedy for someone who used profanity, as a way of literally cleaning their mouth out. I can tell you this, soap tastes horrible.
Ever consider what your words can actually do to someone?
What a range of emotions that can come from merely a few words, enhanced with a little emotion. These words can provoke anger, sadness, encouragement or excitement. Add in some punctuation and you’ve just elevated the meaning and intensity.
The words “I love you” can bring about a change in your heart beat, so can “put your hands up! or “don’t look now”.
Our words can describe who we are, good or bad. They can establish our intellect, sincerity and thoughtfulness or lack thereof.
Words like “thank you”, “excuse me” and “please” can illicit a polite response and the omission can produce just the opposite.
People use words to incite anger and violence, make people laugh or get them to cry or both at the same time. Words have started and stopped wars.
Our words, how we use them, what we say and how we say them, all define who we are. They can tell our mood or hide it just as well.
Our words show the type of character we have, the morals we live by and the ethics we believe in.
We can use our words to magnify our personalities, pat ourselves on the back or to put others down.
Our words can set us apart, join us together or condemn us.
We are defined by our words. Our words, as Jesus said, can justify us or condemn us.
Think about how you use your words today. Your words are extremely powerful.
Use your words to encourage someone today, use your manners and say hello when you pass by a stranger. Be polite. Be kind. And be considerate. Encourage someone or thank them. Control your frustration or complaints.
Want to know a better way to use your words? Go to God in prayer today. Ask God to help you and the words you use.
Remember, what you say and how you say it can bring glory to God, your words can be a blessing to someone and your words can be used to initiate God’s work in their life.
Use your words wisely.
Have a blessed day.
