Deliver
“And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
2 Timothy 4:18
Nowadays nobody wants to wait for anything. The second a red light turns green, someone honks their horn. We pace waiting for the microwave to ding. Emails are checked hourly. And when we order something online, we want it yesterday.
The Greek word for deliver is rhyomai. The definition of deliver is; to bring or transport something from one place to another, to surrender or to secure.
We have become a culture of wanting to be served. We want everyone and everything to satisfy us. We expect things to come to us. It’s no wonder at all that we think of the word deliver, as something being brought to us or that we are being served.
However, the word deliver has another meaning. To bring us out of something. To deliver us away. As in the case with the above verse, Paul is writing about being delivered from evil doings and being preserved for the Kingdom of God. As Paul sat in a Roman prison writing this letter to Timothy, his death would be near. Paul knew God had already delivered him. He was at peace.
We must trust that God will deliver us from the things of this world and make us ready for His Kingdom. This doesn’t mean that we don’t glorify Him, give Him thanks or praise Him. We still have a responsibility as His children.
Jesus died on the cross to deliver us from our sins. Our faith in Him delivers us from this world.
It’s important to remember this as we face day-to-day problems and struggles. We have been delivered by the blood of Christ.
“After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.”
Matthew 6:9-13
