Quiet
Word of the Day: Quiet
“But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely, and shall be quiet from fear of evil.”
Proverbs 1:33
In a world full of chaos, disorder and something going on every second - where does quiet come from? Does quiet even exist?
One definition of quiet from the International Standard Bible dictionary is that of “be undisturbed”. I like that simple definition. Be undisturbed. Seems almost impossible. To never be disturbed.
Where do you go to find your quiet? Mine is any place that is undisturbed. My quiet place is usually void of people, electronic devices and disruptions. I prefer outside, in nature, as my quiet setting. I actually have a preferred time of day about thirty minutes before sunset.
But quiet is hard to find. Our inhabited and civilized world has become anything but quiet. So much commotion going on. Our minds are polluted with so much noise. Bad news, horrible music and movies laced with profanity and sexuality. Our minds are constantly racing with noise.
Nowadays you can walk into any restaurant, social gathering or public space and every single person is on a cell phone. Glued to it. You can drive through a strip mall and watch as people walk on the sidewalk staring at their phone - no idea what is going on around them. I watch people outside, in beautiful environments, married to their phones.
There is noise everywhere. Anywhere you go there is a radio or television on. Cars and trucks are louder. People are noisier. I’m rambling.
To me, this isn’t undisturbed. It’s noise. It’s not quiet. It’s restless.
So where or how can we find quiet? Like the verse above, we can find quiet in the Lord when we call to Him. We can dwell safely in Him and we can be undisturbed from evil. That is true quietness.
“...And shall be quiet from fear of evil.” Just think about that part for a moment. Can you imagine our world like that? Hard to imagine right? I pray for it all the time. And it’s not impossible.
Making time to pray and to read the Bible invites quiet. It silences the sound around us. It draws our focus on God. There is probably a direct correlation between the craziness in the world and the lack of prayer and bible reading going on.
Ever realize that your day didn’t quite go as planned when your prayer time or Bible reading was interrupted? My days are always better when I put prayer in them.
Try to find fifteen minutes today where you can focus on quiet (be undisturbed).
Use this time to draw closer to God and to think about what He has done in your life.
“For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.”
1 Timothy 2:2
