“The ear that heareth the reproof of life Abideth among the wise. He that refuseth instruction despiseth his own soul: But he that heareth reproof getteth understanding. The fear of the LORD is the instruction of wisdom; And before honour is humility.”

‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭15:31-33‬

Do we get defensive or angry when someone critiques us? Or think we know it all? Do we let situations overcome us with stress and fear?

Do we need to be checked?

I struggle here at times and need to be checked. These verses are the perfect reminder that our response in every given situation is a statement of our Christianity. It reflects our beliefs and principles, which should bring glory to God, not make us feel better by how we respond. If our response is righteous and biblical it will honor Christ.

Our response to adversity, being corrected or being critiqued shouldn’t be based on our emotions.

Emotions are optional. We decide how we are going to respond. We can opt-in or we can opt-out.

When we encounter struggles, stress or problems in our lives we need to remember to turn to God for help.  Some of these emotions come from responses we receive from others, but mostly because we allow them.

It is so human to look inward for humanly solutions - and this is why we struggle.

Being checked isn’t just for pride, anger and bitterness - it’s for anxiety, depression and loneliness as well.

These emotions are optional and situational.

The situation will always change when we allow God to work inside of us. The emotions attached to a situation will change because of the work God is doing.

It is difficult to let go of our emotions. So instead of trying to dismiss them or cover them up we should apply God’s Word and go to prayer to ask for help. The most important thing is to know that God will help.

Our solutions should be biblical.  Our emotions should come from our relationship with God, not from our attachment to this world.

Our struggles and pain are real and so is our God.  Too many times we only turn to Him in times of despair. Training to need Him all the time ensures we turn to Him every time.

Check yourself before you wreck yourself.
