Are You Comfortable?

Are You Comfortable?

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

‭‭John‬ ‭14:26‬

Being comfortable depends on different things to different people.

When we take trips to the mountains it’s generally 15-20 degrees cooler than back home in Florida. So at night, my wife says she’s cold, even though I think the weather is just right.

It doesn’t take long when we get there when she will ask for a comforter or blanket to drape across her at night to keep her warm.

I’m always warmer so I usually shed the extra blankets. Either way, we usually seem to be at different ends of the thermometer. She doesn’t like to be cold or to sweat and I enjoy the hot weather and will take the cold as long as I have warm clothes.

The point being, is sometimes it can take a lot of work to be comfortable, sometimes it takes no work at all and sometimes no matter what you do, you can’t seem to get comfortable.

But there is One who can provide all the comfort you will ever need. The Holy Spirit.

The same can be said with The Comforter, the Holy Ghost or the Holy Spirit which is made to indwell in you after you accept Jesus Christ as your savior. Sometimes we can’t get comfortable in life because we aren’t listening to the Holy Spirit.

I admit that I didn’t listen to the Holy Spirit after I accepted Christ.

I was confused by it all. I knew what it was suppose to mean. I understood the concept, but I didn’t open my heart to the idea. The brain got it, the heart didn’t.

I confused the Holy Spirit with my conscience. Although somewhat similar - completely different.

The Holy Spirit is of God. It is not our worldly conscience telling us what is right or wrong. The Holy Spirit provides us with comfort from God. This comfort comes from the things we learn from Jesus Christ in our relationship with Him. These things we learn will be part of us and guide us as our relationship grows. The Holy Spirit inside of us is instant with our salvation even though our growth may take some time to listen and understand it. The Holy Spirit will teach you all things and bring all things to remembrance that Jesus has said.

Think about this. All that you read from the Bible will be made available to you. And that’s not all, all things from Jesus Christ and God will be made available to you because they are the Holy Spirit inside of you.

Someone who isn’t saved will not have the benefit of being in dwelled with the Holy Spirit. All through John Chapter 14 and 16 Jesus talks of the Holy Spirit being in us after he ascends and when we receive Him.

“even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”

‭‭John‬ ‭14:17‬

“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”

‭‭John‬ ‭16:7‬

We will not be comfortable all the time. There will be times in our lives when comfort doesn’t seem to exist. But when we place our faith in Jesus Christ, we receive Him in the form of the Holy Spirit. He is with us always. It’s not temporary. We learn as we grow our relationship with God to listen to the Holy Spirit. Our relationship grows in knowledge as we read God’s word and as we pray to Him.

If we don’t read God’s word it will be hard to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying to us.

Imagine trying to put together a complex set of LEGO’s without looking at the instructions or pictures.

God will provide comfort to us in times of need. Good and bad.

We must learn to not only listen, but to apply what the Holy Spirit is saying to us in our lives.

Next time I’ll grab the blanket for my wife before she asks for it.

“He that loveth me not keepeth not my sayings: and the word which ye hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me. These things have I spoken unto you, being yet present with you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.”

‭‭John‬ ‭14:24-26‬
