Cornerstone
Cornerstone
“Then He looked at them and said, “What then is this that is written: ‘The stone which the builders rejected Has become the chief cornerstone’? Whoever falls on that stone will be broken; but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.” And the chief priests and the scribes that very hour sought to lay hands on Him, but they feared the people —for they knew He had spoken this parable against them.”
Luke 20:17-19
A cornerstone is a symbol of great strength and necessity. A building couldn’t be built without the strength of the cornerstone.
Many times the centerpiece to a business, family, friendship or industry is considered a cornerstone. A cornerstone is defined as something indispensably strong and supportive.
The cornerstone to my family, before her passing, and before turning my life to Christ, was my grandmother. If my brother and I did something she considered pretty bad, we had consequences, but she determined if they went before my grandfather. My grandmother was the glue, the filter, the moderator and the encourager. Without a doubt, she was indispensable and the cornerstone to our family.
As I grew older and lived for the world, my cornerstone would crumble. I would soon realize that I needed a stronger, more reliable cornerstone.
In this parable, Jesus is the cornerstone. He is a symbol of strength and necessity. This parable describes Jesus as the cornerstone.
If we neglected the cornerstone, the building would crumble. If we left the cornerstone on the ground, we would trip over it and become broken. And if the cornerstone fell from the sky it would pummel us into powder.
Jesus Christ is the cornerstone to our faith. He is the strength we draw from that holds us together. He is necessary for us not to crumble. If we neglect Him, we will fall. If we ignore Him, we will be crushed.
The Pharisees knew what this parable meant and that it was about them. They were trying to trip Jesus so they would have something to arrest Him for. They needed Jesus out of the way. Jesus knew the time was coming when He would sacrifice Himself for us. It would make Him indispensable.
They wanted the people to reject Jesus as the cornerstone but Jesus knew he was the cornerstone of faith. The Pharisees had no idea that without Jesus, everything would crumble.
The devil will always try and replace the cornerstone with something else. The world will be used to try and trip us, make us fall and to watch as we crumble. The world will always try to be the stone, but it will never be the cornerstone.
Remember to always look toward Jesus. He is our strength, our rock, our stone and our necessity. Don’t make Him anything else. Because He is all of these things, we are to render ourselves to Him.
“And He said to them, “Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.””
Luke 20:25
