A Pinch of Salt

A Pinch of Salt

“Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men.”

‭‭Matthew‬ ‭5:13‬

I love to cook and I have for a long time. It’s a passionate hobby of mine that I’ve taken seriously out of necessity. You see, in order for me to eat, I have to cook. My wife does not cook.

I don’t use recipes, I use experience based on what I’ve learned over the past 20 years in cooking. I’m not a grand chef, but I also don’t get many complaints.

Seasoning is extremely important in cooking. The wrong seasoning or too much, can ruin a dish.  The lack of seasoning can make things very tasteless. It’s a perfect, yet simple balance.

Salt is the simplest seasoning which provides an enhancement for other seasonings. Most seasonings, other than salt are herbal. There are some proteins that are used as seasonings, some vegetables, bones, fruits, etc. But salt generally brings out the savor in food.

In our lives we are the salt. We are the seasoning that can enrich the walk others have with Jesus Christ. We are the staple ingredient in a walk with God or a Christ-centered life. The salt in our lives produces a flavor others will want.

In the verse above Jesus tells us that we are the salt, the seasoning, and that others should see our Christianity abundantly. He also says that when we have lost our flavor (or our walk), we should be discarded under men’s feet. Just like at home, if a seasoning goes bad, we throw it out.

It is so important to have a life centered around Christ. This life isn’t defined by man, it is defined by you and your relationship with God. No one can tell you that you’re not doing enough. The simple act of them placing attention on you - takes it away from their own walk.

We can increase our flavor by praying more, meditating in Gods word and by reading and studying our bibles. Church is also an important part of this. And so is the way you season others.

Jesus tells us how important we are by being the salt - why would we want to be anything less?

Be the salt in someone’s life and always make sure your salt never loses its flavor.

“Let your speech be always with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man.”

‭‭Colossians‬ ‭4:6‬
