Just One Seed

Just One Seed

“Now He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will supply and multiply your seed for sowing and increase the harvest of your righteousness; you will be enriched in everything for all liberality, which through us is producing thanksgiving to God. For the ministry of this service is not only fully supplying the needs of the saints, but is also overflowing through many thanksgivings to God.”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭9:10-12‬

When we think of a seed biblically, many of us think of planting a seed of The Gospel.  As this is true, it’s not what I want to talk about today.

The seed I want to talk about is the seed of giving.

Isn’t it interesting how just one seed, when planted, produces a plant, which produces hundreds of more seeds, sometimes thousands?

This isn’t luck or evolution, this is divine design.  Think of one single acorn. This acorn, with the proper environment (soil, water, pollination), can grow into another tree producing thousands of more acorns. These acorns are scattered by birds and other animals and fall to the ground. These acorns can produce many many more trees and the cycle continues.

All from one seed or acorn.

In the letter above, Paul writes about charitable and cheerful giving. He writes that God will always reward and replenish what we give.  He reminds the people of the church in Corinth that they committed to giving a financial gift to the church in Jerusalem.

Most importantly, Paul writes that through our giving we bring Glory to God and we let people see the Glory of God at work in us.  Although Paul was writing about financially giving, that isn’t the only thing we can give. We can also give our time and our talents.

Giving isn’t a requirement to be viewed begrudgingly. Giving is a reflection of our ministry of the gospel of Jesus Christ.

When people see us giving,  they are watching God work in us. When people benefit from our giving they are feeling the strength of our ministry.  When others see the entire picture of giving from a Christian they are seeing a reflection of Christ Himself.

Our works as a Christian are a ministry of the The Gospel.  What we do as a born-again believer is a testimony to our ministry in Christ.

Every time We cheerfully give - whether it is our time, our talents or our money, we are spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

These seeds of giving will produce more than we can ever imagine and will be rewarded by God.  We don’t give to be given back to. We give so that others can benefit from what God can do. We give to bring Glory to the Kingdom of God.

Just one seed can produce thousands of seeds. Imagine what a thousand seeds can do!

“Because of the proof given by this ministry, they will glorify God for your obedience to your confession of the gospel of Christ and for the liberality of your contribution to them and to all, while they also, by prayer on your behalf, yearn for you because of the surpassing grace of God in you. Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!”

‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭9:13-15‬
