Being Content
Being Content
“But godliness with contentment is great gain.”
1 Timothy 6:6
What is being content? To some it is an active pursuit, looking for something in their life. For others being content is an excuse for laziness. Being content is a state of needing nothing more while maintaining your relationship with God. Do this and you will gain everything.
In the verse above Timothy says that money is the root of all that is evil. People look at money as a need and something that they work hard for. It’s true in our society that you exchange your labor for financial compensation. However, God has provided you with the opportunity to be able to use your talents in order to receive the compensation as He see’s fit.
You are part of the equation, not the reason.
Too often we put ourselves as the whole to every part. In actuality, we are just the part.
We think of ourselves as the reason things happen, when we are only the thing and He is the reason.
Timothy writes that we should be content with food and clothing, nothing else. God provides everything else for us. And in almost every case, food and clothing are provided as well.
God tells us through Timothy to be content with the minimum. Desire nothing else. We bring nothing into this world. And we will take nothing out of this world.
People always put themselves first and we always want more. And this is where the problems begin. We believe we are the reason we have the great job, the nice house, the money, the good life. So why don’t we think we are the reason when we lose the job, get the divorce and lose the money? We aren’t first then, are we? We never were.
Being content has nothing to do with being first, having the most or finishing with everything.
Being content is a relationship with God where you desire nothing and have it all.
Look at the big picture. Look at where you are, where you’ve come from, how you got here and what it took. In almost every aspect of your life, you had nothing to do with it, unless you stepped away from God’s Will.
Then it was all you.
“But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”
